We should be able to find stripers, Sea Bass, Fluke and if we are lucky the Bonito will show up one of these days. Monday is a hotter day with temperature predicted to hit 97 degrees, to bad I'm working. Dog days of summer mean we have to hunt for some colder water for Stripers and warmer water for Bonito... I was reading up on tides and current in the area we are fishing and there is a lot of "crap" written and I wonder if the "so called" experts know what they are talking about What is "tide", what is your definition of "tide / tides"? Why is there a high tide when the moon is overhead and another around 12 hour and 25 minutes later? Don't say it's a sun tide because on August 1, 2008 the moon rises 2 minutes after the sun and we still have a tide 12 hors 25 minutes later. Westerly Sunrise = 5:43AM & Sunset = 8:04PM Westerly Moonrise = 5:45AM & Moonset = 8:21PM Nautical twilight Starts at 4:33AM and ends at 9:13PM in the evening QUOTE Nautical twilight is defined to begin in the morning, and to end in the evening, when the center of the sun is geometrically 12 degrees below the horizon. At the beginning or end of nautical twilight, under good atmospheric conditions and in the absence of other illumination, general outlines of ground objects may be distinguishable, but detailed outdoor operations are not possible, and the horizon is indistinct. Rise, Set and twilight definitions So who's fishing where on this moonless weekend? Saturday is full of family obligations back home, but Sunday I get to fish. I will be volunteering at the Casting for Recovery retreat... what I lack in skill I'll make up for in enthusiasm and at this event, that counts.
Wish us on fish, the coordinators and volunteers and the 14 special ladies fly-fishing on the Cape Cod Canal this weekend. Prayers for healing, strength, and peace also felt and appreciated. |

There is always crap written in regards to anything fishing. Someone gets it right (gets lucky) a few times and viola instant sports writer. If they can type fast then we get lots of crap...

Nils, I couldn’t answer that question last night because I was too sleepy, but this is how I understand it based on reading a lot of descriptions over the years:
Two forces act on the oceans in a “tidal” sense the centrifugal force caused by the earths rotation and the gravitational pull of the moon and to a lesser extent, the sun. The gravitational pull of the moon pulls the mass of the oceans toward it and if the earth was not rotating, there would be a bulge in the ocean directly beneath the moon. The combined effects of the earth’s rotation and the pull of the moon cause two bulges to be formed, at the closest point to the moon and the opposite side of the earth from that point. As the earth rotates any given location passes underneath the bulges. Earth completes a rotation every 24 hours, divide that by two and you get a hump (high tide) every 12 hours (almost). The solar tide bit contributes to the daily spring and neap tide variation as the sun and moon come in and out of phase the variation of daily tide grows and shrinks. There are surges caused by weather and delays caused by water having to work its wat around land forms etc. I have many unanswered questions about tide. the usually come up at night when Im fishing and looking at the moon. Why is there a high tide when the moon is overhead and another around 12 hour and 25 minutes later?

Wasn't it the last new moon when we were all getting skunked (or darn close to it) in Stonington Harbor? Lots of bioluminescence that night.
Hatchet did a pretty good job of explaining the major tidal forces as I understand them. No fishing for me again this weekend. I will be out kayaking though, with a very good friend visiting for the weekend. I suppose it couldn't hurt too much to bring a fishing rod along. Its funny but I've traditionally done very well boating big stripers in the heat of the first 10 days of August. |
