For months I have been agonizing over buying fly-tying tools but being in and out of work I didn't dare spend the money. Came close, but stopped myself...

Today I did my weekly dump run and as usual I stopped at the Recycle Shack. It's like a free tag sale hut,.. you leave stuff and you take stuff. Well if you balance your dump Karma right, the dump fairies take good care of you. I could tell you MANY stories of when I wanted or needed something and it just turned up at the shack, like within a week or two.

Guess what the dump fairies brought me today! I had tears in my eyes, no kidding, when I found a box with a vice.. and all the tools, and threads, and so many feathers, even peacock and marabou, and popppers and rubber things and bucktail, glues, hooks, fish eyes, all sorts of shiny stuff, and a LOVELY hardcover book called

"An Introduction to FLY Tying" by Peter Cockwill.

I am SOOOOO Happy! Whoevery left them there hoping they would find a good home, I thank you!

Don, I will tie that fly! I'll make you one for your birthday. In the meantime, can you point me to some good beginner patterns?

So today I got as far as setting up a nice work area in my sunroom, sorting the tools and supplies, reading the book, figuring out the vice, wrapping a few wraps and practicing my whip finish... choosing a pattern (criteria, it has to be pretty and made from the supplies I have) I found one, and stopped just short of actually tying it. Now it's too dark in that room, next, find a clip lamp.

I did go to Ken's archives, and that's one I picked! I chose it because because I have the right supplies and have tied that one before, with Ken's Tuesday night group in fact. I have a few in my box that I was going to copy from (as far as how sparce it ends up)

The other one I chose is a herring pattern, has lots of flashy angel hair and it has eyes.. I had to modify the colors because I don't have exact match on the supplies but I think it will work, I'm only missing a reddish color and it's only a streak of it so might find a substitute material for that.

You are right Don. Ray's. thanks!

I've practiced winding and whip finish, and I read Striper Moon again. I read articles and youtubes on the internet, and flipped through my other books to the point where I'm confusing myself.

I've done this before, sometimes even unaided but always in the midst of a crowd of people who know how . Why am I too intimidated to actually tie a fly by myself?

I read that Ray's flies also catch trout. Right on. Don we picked a good first fly. "Now get to work" you said.

And I shall.... ... .. . When I get over my fear of FLYING!

Brenda

First - Great find - if you are that lucky could I send you money to buy my lotto tickets laugh.gif

Don't hesitate any longer - Tie that first fly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It may not look like it should but it will break the ice - if you don't like it you can tear it apart but I wouldn't - I would fish it. It is a great feeling to take a fish on a fly you tied.

I tie patterns and then I tie things I think might work. do I have failures - you bet but it is fun.

Here are a couple of links to easy ties.

Tie and post some pictures.
