I don't think I can agree with Proposed Bill No. 5506 - AN ACT ALLOWING COMMERCIAL FISHING FOR STRIPED BASS.

General Assembly

Proposed Bill No. 5506

January Session, 2009

LCO No. 1989

Referred to Committee on Environment

Introduced by:

REP. ROY, 119th Dist.

AN ACT ALLOWING COMMERCIAL FISHING FOR STRIPED BASS.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:

That title 26 of the general statutes be amended to declare striped bass a predatory fish that is harmful to other species and to allow commercial fishermen to take a limited number of striped bass using conventional tackle, but not by the use of purse seine nets or similar equipment.

Statement of Purpose:

To help balance the diversity of sea life in Long Island Sound.

I hope everyone calls, emails and contact Rep. Roy and let him know it's not in the best interest of Striped Bass management to open up for commercial quote in CT waters:

Just a thought before we jump onto the band wagon.

Some smart people, including Marine Biologists, feel that the Striped Bass population needs to be culled so the population will remain healthy. The herring population in the CT river is diminishing because the Stripers are eating them before they have a chance to breed. Soon the Stripers will loose this and other sources of food and become weak and susceptible to disease and die off. That is just one argument to opening a commercial rod fishing season. Netting will not be allowed. There will be a slot limit that protects the large breeding stock and allows the taking of smaller, and I might add "tastier", fish. The length of the season will control the numbers of culled fish to keep a healthy Striper fishery.

We set seasons and limits on our deer population to keep the heard healthy, why not intelligently manage our fisheries in the same manner?
