So it's an East wind and I can't get to the Cod in the Haba. So what am I going to do? Well, Freshwater is game and why not the Cape? I always heard something about Cape Cod's many ponds, chocked full of SMB's LMB's and stocked trout. So up I am at 4am like a kid on Christmas Eve. On 2 hours sleep I get behind the wheel with yak on top. Ready to go but not so bright eyed, bushy tail? Yes, I'm heading to a new area. DD and the Large regular and pay my 3.50 for the toll, dam that adds up. RT. 3 South, destination The Cape and hopefully some fish!
First stop was a famous pond in Plymouth. Is there a destination without rocks in Plymouth? The Pilgrims must have known something when they landed in 1620. Now here we are in 2008, and I am here for new territory and adventure so you can call me a Pilgrim too to this fresh water fishing ground. Yap, a Mexican/Irish Pilgrim, the worst kind, or you can call me the Illegal Immigrant. Either way I was new to this body of water and I like that challenge. For me it's one of the exciting parts of kayak fishing, finding new spots and adventure. I rolled my kayak off the roof and claimed my spot in search of glory. At first glance this pond looked bigger on the map. 1 1/2 miles long and about 1/2 mile wide, 100 Ft. deep in the middle, but a lot of activity and bass holding structure. On the water at 5:30, sun on it's way up. Clear and calm, no wind. Some type of hatch going on in the middle of the Pond. Fish active, feasting on surface bugs and eggs. I tossed out a D.B. Smelt Spoon in Orange with Black Dots, not long after fish on. This was great! Fish hook up right away. Micro Brookie. Hey, at least I didn't get shut out. Next came the Rainbows. This was non stop action for 2 hours. Fattest Bow of the day is in the pic below. Nice little battle on ultra lite outfit. As soon as the sun came over the tree tops the party was over. I went searching for Smallies. Saw what I thought were Smallies but turned out to be Sucker Fish, filtering the sand in search of food. Later went to another sandy with well placed rocks in circles. Spawning Beds! Do the bass really move these rocks in neat little formations? I saw confirmed Small Mouth on the Spawning Beds. Some small in size and some very nice Females on and around the beds. I tried everything to get a hit including little egg snatching blue gill imitations. Only a slight bump, possibly a head bash from a bass with the message to stay away from my eggs. Exciting, but tough way to finish the morning off. I'll be back for another go at it. Off the water at 9am. I made a call to a buddy of mine I have not seen for a while, another kayak angler, and hooked up for Breakfast at 10 am. Hash and Eggs! Nice feast. At noon I gave Billington Sea Kayak a buzz. Hey, I'm already there in Plymouth. Might as well bug them. Doug the owner of Billington Sea Kayak is a great guy and always a pleasure to talk with. I asked if I could demo the Ultimate 12 by Native. He said, "Sure, take it for a spin." I was back on the water fishing at 1 pm. The Native was a pleasure to fish from. For calm water it was a lot of fun. Standing and casting was hard to get use too in the Ultimate by Native. It will sway more then I like for a platform that is marketed to stand on. Not a flat hull, so that explains the wobble while standing. Compared to a kayak like the flatter hulls in the Ocean Kayak Big Game and Malibu eXtreme and X-factor, the Native is more of a loose platform to stand up and cast. But for sitting and casting I enjoyed the Ultimate 12. Very roomy. Once the skeg is deployed it helps with tracking. Without the Skeg the boat was all over the place. It does have a comfortable chair tough and plenty of leg room. Messed around with Perch and some tiny Smallies while feeling out the Ultimate 12. Had a blast. Off the water at 3pm. Met up with a bass boat guy and we talked about fishing another Plymouth Pond. He said, "Come evening, it's on again for LMB and SMB." Well, you know I had to go back and launch. Talked up a storm with Doug and his staff at Billington Sea. Talking about kayak fishing in New England and what direction it is heading in. A positive direction from what I see. Back on the water at 5pm in search of Bass. I don't want just any Bass I want some of these Lunkers that have been talked about in many recent fresh water reports about Southern New England lakes and ponds. This time I have my ride with all the tackle and electronics. I'm ready for action. I started with a XCalibur Xs4 Stick Bait in Pearl Shad. It turned out that's all I would need. Twitch, twitch, pause, twitch twitch and SLAM!! Fish on!!!!!!! What a hit on light tackle. I thought I was on bottom. A little head shake and struggle proved otherwise. The smaller 3lbers displayed awesome aerial acrobatic movements clearing the water. Awesome! The larger fish gave huge head shakes at the surface creating an explosion of water in an effort to throw the plug. I bowed the rod to the bass to give slack. What fun! Smart fish, diving down and giving the constant head shake and swimming back towards the kayak to create slack line! The 6.0:1 picked up line in a hurry, that fish had no chance. What a battle on 10lb power pro and lite rod. I spent 2 hours fishing and caught 5 Bass. All 3lbs and up. These two beauties below were the largest. Estimate the two largest @ 5lb class and 6lb class! Nice day on the water and worth all the effort. Tight lines! ![]() ![]()

Thanks guys. That's a Sony Cyber Shot Cam. Old one but still takes a decent pic.
