I had the good fortune to work with Don Coyne in the filming of an episode of Fishing The Ocean State, which aired last year. The approach is a little different in that it combines a lot of nice kayak fishing scenes with clips of poetry that I have written about fishing. I am honored that Don presently has the entire show on his website (in three parts), because he has done many excellent shows and has only a limited amount posted on his new website

Not sure how long it will be up on the site, so I wanted to share it with UKF while it is available. If you live in the RI market, this is a really nice show featuring all local fishermen that airs both on Cox Cable and Channel 6. One of the neat things about the show is that people have good days and bad days of fishing on it vs. most shows where the guest always does very well. I liked that aspect of the show until he asked me to do an episode, at which time I did everything in my power not to have a bad day. Fortunately I was sucessful. While not a highlight reel, there was a lot of nice action.

The first two segments double as an instructional video for tube and worm fishing from a kayak, so those who are new to this technique might find it helpful. The third section is on kayak rigging and safety. The kayak featured is my old Outback. I am using a new one now, which I have rigged a little differently and like much better.

If you want to watch the show in its entirety, be sure to click on the first "Poetic Kayak Fishing" (7:12) link first; my favorite fishing scene is in the second "Poetic Kayak Fishing" clip (6:53) which shows a good portion of a fight with a 16 pound striper in moderately rough water. The third section "kayak fishing equipment" is on kayak rigging with an eye toward safety.

I value the resource Nils has put together here and all of the information provided by so many of you. As a relatively new member and wanted to try to share something of substance. I look forward to getting to know you as time goes on.

Best,

Bob

Bob,

Great post!!! I enjoyed the video.

I'm looking forward to meeting you at the seminar you're doing at the "CT/RI Coastal Fly Fishers" meeting. When it gets a little closer to the date I'll post the information here.

Bob, have you thought about or used sinking fly line in place of lead core?

I haven't thought about sinking fly line Don. The typical range of how much line I have out is 45 to 90 feet, though I will sometimes go as far as 180 feet. I like that the line drops evenly over its whole length and I am now very practiced in what I need to do to be near the bottom with very few snags at most any depth I fish. Interesting idea. Have you done it? I wonder about bulk on my reel and wonder about the durability of the fly line in relation to the cost. I get my line in 1000 yard spools so, even though it is not very durable, it is pretty cost efficient. One roll lasts me two years. What do you see as the potential advantages of using fly line, aside from the issue of lead itself which does bother me?

Bob,

A level (same diameter the whole length) sinking fly line isn't too expensive, comes in 100 ft lengths and is the smallest diameter of all the fly lines.

I think that there may be advantages and disadvantages when compared to lead core. I've never used sinking fly line (SFL) so some of these are just assumptions.
>SFL's come in lots of sink rates and weights all listed on the package
>SFL's are no larger in diameter (possibly smaller) than lead core.
>SFL's pound test is 25 to 30 lbs
>SFL's aren't color coded
>SFL's contain no lead
>SFL's have a consistent sink rate the full length of the line
>You mention in the video that you chance out your lead core very often as it deteriorates quickly. I think that SFL will outlast lead core if you don't scrape it up on rock ledges or bottom.
>Fly line stretches a lot but I guess lead core does as well.
I'm sure that there are more.

I've read a couple articles by boat guys that are using SFL's in place of lead core. It seems that they like it. I haven't tried it but I plan to if I ever tube & worm again.
