Hi Mac!
I like saltwater more for fishing and freshwater more for just paddling around.

I'm the opposite. I like lakes for fishing and sea for paddling.. In the sea, paddling can take you anywhere, far out into waves or into coves and nooks, always some new place to explore just a little farther out.... exploring. We have small lakes , once you paddle to the other side then what? I like fishing in a lake in a yak - I can get to those trees on the other side where the bass are hiding where I never could get to from shore fishing, and the fish are easier to manage in a yak too.

I don't think you were seriously asking Mac, but you got two free answers signluvplace.gif

This is great - this is the most activity this board has had in a l-o-n-g time. I figured with winter coming up north more people would be at the keyboard "reliving" the warm weather moments.

OK, my bad.. I should have clarified. The saltwater fishing is fun to me because I love catching stripers. Too much fun! Also caught black sea bass, scup and a skate this summer too. Plan to go to Florida in January to get some more saltwater fishing in on Matlacha.

Freshwater paddling around here is really great. We have lots of long rivers. I also did a lot of exploring on the Missouri River this past August.

Hi to everyone!

Hi Nils, long time! I honestly have hardly fished at all. Somehow I got the wind knocked out of my sails early in the summer, and never got it back.

Flygirl and I have been talking about trout and has got me thinking about my making my own dries and nymphs. Driving up to meet her at Upcountry for nymph supplies and hopefully a nice mild afternoon for casting a few flies into the farmington.

Still the matter of "no vise"... and I'm thinking maybe that $25 Cabella's kit might be a good start for me since it's all I can really afford right now. Flygirl said I should ask Santa, deal.gif but I told her that My santa thought fly fishing meant fishing with actual real house-flies for bait!.... so I think I'll handle the vise thing myself crazysanta.gif

SeaWitch

I am not sure which Cabela's kit you are looking at, but sometimes those kits are "padded" with stuff you will never use. In the long run it may be cheaper to buy a vise and the materials you need as you go.

They are friendly people at Up Country. When I am in the area I normally drop off a stack of brochures for the outfitter I work for with them.

Also I know Orivs in Simsbury/Avon on Rt 44 offers free tying lessons during the winter months.

In addition the Marlboro, MA show is coming up in Jan and sometimes you can get some good deals. I did read in another forum that it looks like the show may be smaller then it was last year.

I don't know if you are getting into tying freshwater or saltwater flies. If saltwater, send me a PM if you are interested, and I can send you some links to check out on tying.

If you never fished it, the Farmington above Riverton is a nice place to fish. If you go up East River Road from Pleasant Valley it will take you to Rt 20 in Riverton. Go straight and take you first road to the left. All kinds of pull offs and some very easy wading.

You just talked me out of the cheap kit again :-)

It's a $25 kit and every time I contemplate buying it, I hear that it's just not worth it, for the reasons you state, plus it's not big or strong enough to tie salties on it.

I want to tie both. I love trout, and have good luck with dries and nymphs, but I live close to ocean and I have my favorite spots for fishing striper too.

I will see what I find at UpCountry. Calling Don M too to see if there might be a used one around the shop.

I actually learn from some great guys from striper moon who get together on Tuesday nights for tying. They are great fun and patient teachers, and they share everything from vises and supplies to tied flies. Alas, borrowing gets old, so it's time I put on my big girl pants and bring my own toys. clapping.gif

Feel free to post the links to tying flies here, that way others can use them too. There is a fly-tying section to our forums, you could post them there. It will be nice to have them for reference any time.

Thanks for the advice mac, you just saved me from my own impatience $25 plus shipping.

Thanks Nils. Those are out of my price range right now, maybe when I'm working steady! I just took a 6 week assignment building a web interface that chops, slices and dices (data) (haha, and they'd have me making it wash the dishes if they could!) which ends Dec 24th, then I'm on the bench again.

Hey Brenda,
Why don't you post some photos of your flies?

Good luck on the job hunt, I remember you have been very close to getting something big.

Forget the dishwashing!
