Ninigret Pond Access

Many of us enjoy fishing Ninigret Pond from the shore at Grassy Point, and many of us will welcome the excellent new kayak launch that has been installed there. But there is a problem of parking access after dark at Ninigret.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service manages the Ninigret Preserve, including the parking area at Grassy Point and the kayak launch. However, access to that part of the Preserve is through Ninigret Park, which is owned by the Town of Charlestown, and the Town has a policy that the park is closed at sundown. There is a sign at the gate stating that the gate is locked at sundown, and the Town often does lock that gate. Some anglers have had their cars locked in overnight, many others rush to leave the Park by dark, thereby missing some of the best fishing opportunities at Ninigret.

Charlie Vandemoer, who is the US F&W manager of the Wildlife Preserve, has agreed to work with us in approaching the Town to seek an arrangement that allows extended access but also addresses any issues or concerns the Town might have. Charlie will also pass along to the Town authorities any letters or emails he receives supporting nightime access to Ninigret during the fishing season.

If you care about this issue it is important that you let Charlie know that, in writing. A suggested letter is attached; of course you should submit whatever accurately expresses your views. Emails should be sent to Charlie at the link below; letters should be mailed to him at the address shown on the attachment. Please be sure to include your name and address.

Charlie_Vandemoer@fws.gov

Please write to Charlie, and if you have any fishing friends who might not receive this communication, pass a copy along to them. It is important that we make a good showing of interest in providing nighttime access for fishing and kayaking at Grassy Point.

Sample letter:

Mr. Charles Vandemoer, Refuge Manager
Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex
50 Bend Road
Charlestown, RI 02813
Charlie_Vandemoer@fws.gov

Dear Mr. Vandemoer:

This letter is to seek your assistance in providing for use of the Ninigret Wildlife Preserve at Grassy Point after sundown during the fishing season. As you know, the Grassy Point area provides excellent fishing opportunities and, especially during Rhode Island's famous "worm hatch," draws anglers primarily from Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts and also visitors from all over the world.

But the fishing is best at night - the worm hatch generally does not begin until late in the afternoon and often extends well past dark - and the Town Park's posted policy of locking the gate at sundown is a major hindrance, since most anglers rush to leave before sundown even if, unknown to them, the gate will not be secured that particular evening. This deprives the public of an important point of access to some of Rhode Island's finest shore fishing, and significantly diminishes the utility of the Ninigret Preserve and the benefit of the new kayak launch at Grassy Point. Please help us to obtain a change in the Town's policy that will enable us to fish and kayak at Grassy Point without fear of being locked in after dark.

Thank you, in advance, for your assistance in this matter.

New Member, Looking For Fishing Buddy

Hey all, this may be a weird and unconventional post but I'll just get down to the point anyways. I'm a 22 year-old full-time Pharmacy student at Uconn School of Pharmacy. I don't own a kayak, I don't own any kind of boat, but I love fishing. I've fished Niantic for two years on a kayak with an old friend, along with other areas like Rhode Island, CT River, Thames River, etc... The kayak belonged to a buddy of mine, and sometimes we took his boat, but he's an engineer now and he moved to North Carolina. In a sense, I'm asking to "spare" if you will, but I look at it (and ask that you look at it) as an oppurtunity to fish with new faces. I am currently trying to invest in a kayak of my own, but it's difficult in my situation especially considering that I don't come from a privileged background. I've really only had one fishing buddy here in CT, so if anyone is willing to meet and fish with new people then let me know. All I can offer is to pay at least half of fuel (if on a boat), and I'm very great at trapping eels. I usually bring a gauranteed 12-15 eels with me from trapping them the night before, and I'd definitely be willing to share them. I am also very willing to share the tackle I have. So yeah, I do realize it sounds stupid, especially now that the season is over, but I just have to get out there next year and fish, and I'd rather not be out there on my own.

Heavy When Wet

I stopped at the Mystic Drawbridge last night around 9:00 on my way home from somewhere and all I had with me was a flyrod so I decided to give that a try. I know there are plenty of eel in that part of the river so I used the furry strip black sand eel as bait.

The plan was to dead drift the outgoing tide, bottom drift and slow retrieve. When I tried to roll cast (limited space, walls behind me on the dock, plus I was trying to catch fish, not tourists), I found the fly far too heavy to effectively cast it out into the water. I ended up just sort of dropping it in, and mending it out into the tidal flow which I also found difficult until the fly was a fair distance from me. Once I got the hang of it, it kept me entertained for a couple of hours but "no fish".

I was using a light (6-wt) rod, would my 8-wt have done a better job of it?

I think my retrieve was still too fast but I was afraid of getting stuck on the bottom - should I get over that and just let it drop?

Is this even a sensible strategy for striper?

I'm really tempted to try that fly on my medium weight spinning gear, fishing it like a lure - does it have enough weight to it?

How come I can't catch a striped bass? Don't say "sandworms" -there's more than one way to skin a cow.

Shore And Boat Access Threatened In Barrington

I am the vice-chairman for the RISAA public access committee. I am writing this with the hope that you will be able to attend a very important meeting on Wednesday November 19 at the Town Library auditorium (upstairs) at 7:30 pm.

You may have already heard that this year, attempts have been made to restrict nighttime parking at the Daunis right of way, which is located at the end of Nayatt road. The two parking spots on the right of way is the only way to access the shore for miles in either direction, and restricting nighttime parking would eliminate the prime hours for fishing. Regardless of the outcome, this decision will set precedent throughout the state.

In addition to this, the council will now also consider doing the same at the boat ramp at Haines state park…one of the best and most popular boat ramps in the area.

We need town residents to speak out against these restrictions. Please attend this meeting and state that you live in town and want the right of way to remain open and accessible to the public twenty four hours a day. If you can’t attend the meeting for any reason, please write the town council stating your position. If you are married I encourage you to have your spouse attend or write a letter as well.

We also need people like me, who doesn’t live in town, but use both areas to be there and let the town council know how these ordinances would negatively affect you.

If you like I can email you a short letter, where all you will have to do is fill in you name and address.
