Anchors Away - "bad Day At Black(fish) Rock"

So the other day I decided to try toggin' from the kayak for the first time. Well let me just say it was a "Bad Day at Black(fish) Rock".

First off, bait shop didn't have green crabs. I didn't want to buy clams so I opted for sandworms because I knew I'd use them for tubing anyway. I get to the spot, drop anchor, and drop a line down. Within a couple minutes I'm snagged on the bottom and lose my sinker. No big deal, it's all part of the tog experience. I decide I want to pull anchor and move back a bit.

Easier said than done. Anchor won't budge. I tried from every possible angle to no avail. At this point I remember that I never switched the tie off on the anchor to the bottom eye. After much frustration, I was to the point of cutting the line when I saw a small boat and flagged him down. He graciously helped and the anchor was freed.

So, to get to point of this, here's my question;

On this type of folding anchor, with the line tied to the bottom eye and zip-tied to the top eye (as shown in photo), is the center locking ring necessary? It seems to me that the line would hinder it from sliding down and locking the claws in place. Also, is there any benefit to using the shackle with this setup?

Thanks,

Rob

http://www.ultimatekayakfishing.com/forums/post-a553-anchor001.JPG

Can I Install An A Hatch In My Sink Kayak?

So is there any reason that I can not install an A Hatch in the bow of my SInK kayak? has anyone here done this? seems like all the diy hatches I have seen are on SOT's. I can't think of a reason why I can't. Am I missing something?

Diy Fishing Deck For Cockpit Of Sik

Clamp-on Fishing Deck can be modified to hold whatever you need it to hold. I designed mine to hold a compass (necessary for when the FOG rolls in), HummingBird Fish Finder Console w Battery-pack, and Sub-surface Rod Holder.

Total Cost for deck less Compass / FishFinder / Rod Holder = Less than $ 17.00

I sourced the indestructable plastic cutting board ($5.69 Ocean State Job Lot), Stainless Steel "U" bolts (Home Improvement Store $3.69 each), Misc Hardware (same HI store).

Since a Pic is worth a thousand words, please refer to attached pic's. Note that I had to buy "U" bolts and cut them up to make "J" hooks because of the X-tra wide gap my Yak Cock-pit Lip required. . . .yes, you can drill holes and bolt it on as an alternate mounting option, but that may effect resale value when you trade-up for that nicer Yak next year

I had planned to mount a water bottle holder under the front center location, but have not done that yet, . . . .which reminds me, you can always find room to add something else (keeper cords, pliers, small tackle box ?).

Unrelated : I included a Pic of inside of Kayak nose filled with "Great-Stuff" spray-in expanding foam insulation for extra buoyancy (Home Improvement Store).

Good Luck all, in making your own custom clamp-on Deck for your SIK x-tra large cock-pit !

Easy Way To Mount A Thru-hull Transducer!

If you're looking for a fairly solid but easily removable way to mount a thru-hull sonar transducer,..I've found that "plumbers putty" works very nicely! Just roll up a gumball-sized wad of it in the palm of your hands to warm it up and make it nice and soft,..then stick it to the bottom of your transducer and squish it into place against the inside of your kayak-hull. The putty, creates a nice air-free seal between the kayak-hull and the transducer. A strip or two of duct-tape over the top of the transducer holds it pretty firmly in place until you decide that it needs to come off. A little bit of water seems to be no problem but even in the worst case,..you might have to replace the duct tape every now and then!

The putty stays soft and removeable almost indefinitely and allows you to easily remove the transducer puck any time you need to!
