UKF made a strong showing at Jamaica Bay May 5-7, with Robert H taking 3rd place in the open division with a beautiful 33" inch Weakfish. Weakfish was what we came for and big Weakfish is what we caught. Although this tournament took place only last weekend, the planning began many months ago with the outfitting of the Kayaks with rod holders, trolley systems, and electronics. Jamaica Bay, a little slice of heaven amongst a concrete jungle, is located on the south eastern side of Brooklyn, New York, and is noted for the early arrival of Striped Bass, Bluefish, and big Weakfish. ![]() Jamaica Bay NY Robert and Craig met up Friday morning, loaded the car, and headed down the road to join Don O in Old Saybrook. Don had stopped at King Cove to pick up a flat of sandworms, complements of Don and Kevin. Traffic was tough, but nothing compared to Sunday return drive taking 2 ½ hours to get from Brooklyn to the Bronx. ![]() Our little bivouac among the early arrivers, thatīs Don O at the cooler We arrived in J-Bay about 5:00 PM, setup camp, cooked dinner (Jamaica Bay Jerked Pork, Christians & Moors (Black Beans & White Rice), and Creole Okra), and headed for the water for some night fishing. That night Craig caught his first Weakfish (35") on a Pink SPRO 1 oz Jig. We all finally got in bed about 12:45 that night and back up the next morning at 5:30 AM for breakfast when Kevin and Roland arrived. We helped them set up camp and at 7:00 Robert, Don O, Kevin, Roland, and Craig hit the water in search of fish, as UKF had been challenged by The Riddler (Jeff at NEKF) for a Saturday Match. By lunch time Curley showed up and setup his campsite and He and Robert headed back out for some more fishing. Kevin and Roland got into a huge school of big Bunker and began live-lining them, catching some Stripers and Blues. By the end of the day UKF had won the challenge with Craig and Sean (Curley) landing two 12 lbs Weakfish. That night was the Captains Meeting, dinner, and then to bed for an early wakeup. ![]() Happy Camper with a 12 pounder Sunrise came fast with Nils arriving at the crack of dawn. The tournament began at 6:00AM with fair weather and a strong breeze blow out to the ocean with an out going tide. Paddling was tuff as Nils and Curley headed towards Nils´s honey hole, Kevin and Roland headed out to areas that had scouted out the day before, and Robert, Don, and Craig head out to their hunting grounds. Fishing was slow, with some small Stripers and nice Bluefish caught, but Robert´s time on the water finally paid off with him nailing a 33" Weakfish on a Pink T&W and a second larger (long line release) on a Pink Jig. Craig had burned all his Karma the last two days and could only muster up some nice Blues that would not take a hook. The event ended at 3:30 and when the totals were finally tabulated Robert took third place in the Open Division. The winning fish was a 36" Striper and second place 35 ½" Striper. ![]() Nils and Gary G waiting for the final count ![]() Robert with the 3rd place Weakfish The drive home was filled with fond memories of beautiful weather, great fishing, and times shared with good friends. All and all there were well over 200 people plus one Kayak Fishing Dog "Tarzan" that attended the event and we meet a lot of new people from Texas, Florida, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maine, as well as hooking up with old friends like Nils, Robert H, Craig (Stonercj58), Don O, Curly, Kevin (Special K), Roland (Hobie Wan), Gary G, JoeV, Jeff (The Riddler), and Lefty. If I missed anyone, I am sorry, and if you had a good time at this one, don´t forget, the next Kayak Fishing Event is UKF Rodeo in Stonington Connecticut June 10th and 11th. Hope to see you all there, until then fair winds and tight lines; hope to see you out on the Salt. |
