The Women on Water (WOW) forums cover a very unique aspect of kayak fishing. While women are able anglers, and skills or knowlege may not differ much, we are indeed a unique group of anglers.
The WOW forums' invitation is the same as the rest of this gathering of like-minded fish-folk...
"We are here to promote the sport of kayak fishing and to help others by educating them and ourselves in the process." Except that in WOW, we are here to promote among women the sport of fishing and the sport of kayaking, and as the two merge, women merge in as well.
There is a public WOW forum, where we welcome all to share advice and fish stories. The guys on the site are so supportive, so knowlegable, and their contribution is invaluable. There's also a private forum, where we can solve those unique issues such as PFDs that don't fit right because our bodies are shaped differently. (must be female for access to the private forum).
Fly Tying Me ! - Wed, 17 Mar 2010 23:31:06 +0000
For months I have been agonizing over buying fly-tying tools but being in and out of work I didn't dare spend the money. Came close, but stopped myself...
Today I did my weekly dump run and as usual I stopped at the Recycle Shack. It's like a free tag sale hut,.. you leave stuff and you take stuff. Well if you balance your dump Karma right, the dump fairies take good care of you. I could tell you MANY stories of when I wanted or needed something and it just turned up at the shack, like within a week or two.
Guess what the dump fairies brought me today! I had tears in my eyes, no kidding, when I found a box with a vice.. and all the tools, and threads, and so many feathers, even peacock and marabou, and popppers and rubber things and bucktail, glues, hooks, fish eyes, all sorts of shiny stuff, and a LOVELY hardcover book called
"An Introduction to FLY Tying" by Peter Cockwill.
I am SOOOOO Happy! Whoevery left them there hoping they would find a good home, I thank you! |
Women's Welcome - Wed, 23 Dec 2009 00:48:16 +0000
I've added this welcome section to give our new ladies a space where they can introduce themselves, if they so choose. Our own version of "who are you and where do you fish," if you will.
Long overdue, a welcome to Goldfishgoddess, this girl kayaks hard! It's been fun reading your adventures on the shoutbox. Up and down the coast she goes, from Florida to (in the spring) Connecticut! Keep the posts and shouts coming, you are a very welcome addition to our forums.
A brand new member, scramer (Stephanie), welcome welcome, teach us to flyfish my new friend! Stephanie is an experienced flyfisher and kayaker, I don't know yet if she does both at the same time because I haven't asked that yet.
A few other women members have come and gone, maybe one day they'll breeze on through and say hi again.
Anyways, here's your space. Who are you and where do you fish? |
Talking To Myself, - Tue, 19 May 2009 15:01:51 +0000
I'm off to hippie camp again this weekend. Fire and Drum circles, Meditations, and... Trout Fishing... odd combination but it really works for me.
Last year I blogged this experience, the hippie camp trout experiment, and I went back tonight on the eve of my rendezvous with my friends on the other side of the state, to re-read my notes. I'm glad I did. I'd forgotten about the "sitting on the rocks watching the water" and Id forgotten about "all possible baits" and now I have floaty stuff. I like that I blogged this, lessons learned.

Windy - Sat, 11 Apr 2009 17:22:44 +0000
I learned today about Wind. SW winds at 15mph can knock a yak off the car. It can knock a SeaWitch back to shore too. I blogged a funny blog about it but it wasn't so funny out in it, it was difficult. Today, it was about Air more than it was about water or fish. Simple, invisible, taken-for-granted Air.
How do you know/find out about Wind? I checked the weather.com this morning, and next to Wind, it said "Calm". The trees outside my windows said "Calm".
Then, all of a sudden................
The wind began to switch......Click to read my Discovery blog..... |
A Note To All My Fans... - Fri, 27 Feb 2009 02:15:37 +0000
Here, of all places, there are men and women among us who would have me believe that it's not possible to catch a sea-run brown trout in February.
...... doubters, non-believers, skeptics.... the pressure is on, the stakes are high, I feel challenge. I will be out on Saturday, as the sun sets.
I may not catch stripers, but I can trick a trout. Even in February.
Stay tuned..... |
A Letter To The Fairies - Mon, 23 Feb 2009 20:20:28 +0000
I went back fishing to the same place tonight, for another trout. When I got there, it felt different than yesterday. It was darker and less inviting. It was indeed later in the day and the sun was down, so maybe that's all it was..... When I started fishing, every cast got caught on something, immediately sank, or tangled in the air. I checked my line and I checked my fly, I dried and powdered my fly; nothing seemed amiss, except that not once did that fly float gently down the stream. Then my fly got caught in a tree on the other side, and I lost the entire leader. I had more flies in the car, and more tippet material, but I knew if I went back, the same thing would happen. And besides, it really was getting dark now.
I think I got ganged up on by some pissed off fae who remembered me from yesterday. Note: the term "fae" refers to elementals including fairies, undines (water fairies and sprites), elves, and trolls... and they are nature's guardians. I was in the woods on the water under a bridge so I could have encountered them all.
I am sending them this message - a letter to the fairies:
Dear fae, those under and around that bridge,
I know you are upset that I took the trout from the stream and I know you saw it suffer. I want you to know that I took it for food, as you know humans are carnivorous creatures. It is a natural thing that I did, we humans have been fishing as long as we have been alive.
I beg your pardon, and I ask you this: I know you tangled my line tonight and stole my fly; from now on please let me be when I come to fish. Maybe you could even help me, guiding me to those fish that are shortest lived anyways (which just might be the biggest ones, providing more food for myself and my family). In return, I will be kind to the fish I release, I will pick up any trash I find in your area, and I will fish as ethically as I am able in any waters and at all times.
Thank you for your attention, and I hope we will be friends.
Sincerely SeaWitch
